The Red Sox Christmas List

Dear Santa,

I am a Red Sox fan. I have been a very good boy this year. I don't want much, really. All I want is another World Series trophy. Is that too much to ask for? Am I being greedy? If not, here's what the Red Sox need to win back-to-back championships:

  • Keep Jacoby Ellsbury
This is doable, right Santa? I mean, could we really win another Championship with Crisp in center field for 162 games? Crisp has been a decent player for the Sox but it's time for Ellsbury to be unleashed. We can't expect him to hit like he did in the World Series over the course of a full season, but he's going to be fun to watch. We need to start the Ellsbury era.
  • Have the Twins trade Santana ... anywhere
At this point, I don't even care if he becomes a Sox. I'm sick of this whole thing dragging out. I want to know who's going to be in the starting rotation and the lineup ASAP. To be honest Santa, I don't think the Sox really need Johan. Yeah, he's good but we've done it without him so why can't we do it again without him?
  • Have Youkilis grow his beard back
This is the most obvious need for the Red Sox in 2008. Where's the magic if Youk's chin is bald? There is none.
  • Cure the slumps of Lugo, Drew
It was hard enough to drag Lugo and Drew along during the season while they struggled. Imagine if they played up to their potential, Santa. Then we wouldn't have to even play the World Series; we'd get the trophy before we even had to win 11 games. If Drew hit .290 with 20 home runs and Lugo can get on base and play solid defense, then I'm happy and Red Sox Nation is happy. I know this is a stretch Santa, but maybe we could work something out?
  • One great, final year out of Curt
Love him or hate him, we all want to see Mr. Curt do his thing and finish off his career in a great way. Schill is an amazing competitor and he's going to put it all out on the line. How's 17 wins sound? I like that. Maybe it's a lot, but I want to see Schill go out on top.
  • A comeback season from the Captain
If Jorge Posada could do it, Captain Varitek can do it. Varitek might be getting older and his knees might be aching a little bit more but he's our rock we rally behind. It'd be nice to see him surge and get the bat back. I'm not asking for much, just a little bit better than previous seasons. We love our Cap'n and we just want to keep it that way for more than a couple reasons.
  • Beat the Yankees ... each and every game
Santa is a Red Sox fan. This one is definitely coming true. He wears red, not pinstripes.

Re: The Red Sox Christmas List
On mine, in addition to these:
  • NBA Finals (appearance) for the C's.
  • Another SB for the Pats.
Y'know, just to tide me over until truck day.

Re: The Red Sox Christmas List
1)Jacoby will be there next year

2)Santana will be a Red Sox

  1. The magic will be back :P
  2. Drew will be slugging the hell outta the ball, Lugo not so much
5)Schilling will go out on top; will be physically ready to start the season

6)The Captain will not have an awesome year but he will regain some lost power

7)Hell yes

"Why not us?"

Re: The Red Sox Christmas List
You know, Lugo hit .280 after the all-star break. If he did only that well and no better for the entire 2008 season, it would be plenty -- just keep him batting ninth and let Jacoby lead off.

Re: The Red Sox Christmas List
Santana is no way something that we need...however, with the lineup the Tigers are throwing out another excellent starting pitcher sure wouldn't hurt.

Re: The Red Sox Christmas List
The Tigers have the potential, when Verlander isn't pitching, to be one of the most one-dimensional teams ever. Two good defenders (Granderson, Polanco), two okay-decent ones who are considered great on reputation (I-Rod, Pudge), then some really abysmal defenders elsewhere (Magglio, M-Cab). I mean, how many GBs are going to get through the hole between Cabrera and Renteria? Jacque Jones is going to feel like a 5th IF.

Re: The Red Sox Christmas List
I-Rod is Pudge, so unless he's playing two positions at the same time, the Tigers only have one okay-decent defender who is considered great on reputation.

Re: The Red Sox Christmas List
Good catch, with me not paying attention. I meant Renteria.

Re: The Red Sox Christmas List
Their offense has potential to put up six runs consistently. That is unless they are facing Santana or Beckett.

Re: The Red Sox Christmas List
Their starters (non-Verlander division), bullpen, and non-Granderson/Polanco defense could easily allow the same. They're also in the unenviable situation of having minimal trade chips if they need something at the deadline.

I mean, I think they'll do better in that division than they did last season. I also think they were a scarier postseason opponent for teams in 2006.

Re: The Red Sox Christmas List
I don't get the bit about "trade Santana ... anywhere".  Does that include the Yankees?  We really don't need to see that, do we?

Re: The Red Sox Christmas List
Not one single Red Sox fan I speak with is willing to give up Ellsbury in a trade for Santana.

Remember last year the many, many times we needed a hit to win a game and Crisp, Lugo, Hinske, Cora or one of the other undependables was coming up to bat and was a sure out?

Then Jacoby Ellsbury came along and injected a LOT of excitement into the Red Sox lineup and also a lot of hits.

He is the most exciting kid to come along since Nomar.

WE NEED HITTING more than we need pitching.  Don't give away a pure hitter like Ellsbury.  We can get along without Santana but not Ellsbury.

Don't do it Theo.

Re: The Red Sox Christmas List
I like Ellsbury, but he shouldn't be untouchable.  While it's true that Ellsbury is an exciting player, let's not make him out to be the Sox' savior in 2007.

Boston had the best record in baseball last season, pretty much from April to October.  Ellsbury only accounted for 116 of the team's 5589 ABs.  Crisp, Lugo, Hinske, and Cora couldn't have hurt the offense too much because the Sox finished 3rd in the AL in runs scored.

Boston's second-half success cannot be attributed to one player.  Ellsbury had a great September: .361 AVG/.390 OBP/.536 SLG in 97 ABs.  While those numbers are much better than Coco's September (.269/.311/.388 in 67 ABs), Ellsbury only scored 5 more runs, drove in 5 more runs, and stole 1 more base than Crisp, despite 30 more ABs.  Don't forget that Ortiz and Drew were monsters in September, and Mike Lowell and Dustin Pedroia were very good.

Johan Santana is one of the best players in baseball.  Elite pitchers are far more valuable than exciting OFs.  You should also remember that you can never have too much pitching.  That said, I don't think the Sox should throw Ellsbury into the mix--only because they don't have to.  Minnesota will lose Santana now, at the trade deadline, or at the end of the season.  Boston or any other interested team does not have to offer "equal value."  The Sox' package of Lester, Lowrie, Coco, and Masterson is fair--and far better than what the MFY have reportedly offered.

I want Santana.  He is one of the best--if not the best--pitchers in baseball.  The Sox can get along without Ellsbury (they did most of last year).  Starting pitching is the most valuable commodity in baseball.  You can never have enough pitching.  However, the Sox don't need to trade Ellsbury to get Santana.  The Twins have no leverage.  Theo has made his offer (as have the MFY).  Most reports say Ellsbury isn't included in Boston's package of players.  I can't see the FO panicking, especially after winning it all in '07.  Also, the longer the Twins wait, the less they'll get in return.

Don't panic.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Interesting review of just how amazing Pedro's career with the Sox was in wake of the Mitchell Report... http://tankthefrank.blogspot.com/

How lucky we were to be able to see him in his prime.
