Gabe Kapler back in the bigs: signs with Brewers

Former Red Sox legend Gabe Kapler signed with the Milwaukee Brewers after coming out of retirement recently:

Kapler, an eight-year veteran who managed in Boston's farm system in 2007, yesterday signed a one-year, $800,000, contract with the Milwaukee Brewers.

"My experience in Boston was amazing on so many levels," Kapler wrote in an e-mail Thursday night. "My relationship with the city and the fans is and will always be special." Kapler refuted the suggestion the Sox were not receptive to inviting him back as a player because he'd quit as a manager. "As far as the question about burning bridges, it could not be further from the truth," he said. "My relationship with [Sox] baseball [operations] is stronger than ever."

I'm happy for Kapler. I'd love to see him break into the starting lineup and prove his worth. Kapler will be a great clubhouse presence for a young team. The Red Sox didn't have the room for Kapler, so I'm glad he was able to sign a contract with an National League team. We can watch him -- but from afar. Thankfully he's not in New York.

Re: Gabe Kapler back in the bigs: signs with Brewe
What price, sentiment?

"The Red Sox didn't have the room for Kapler"

A few months ago a rumour I heard was that Gabe might be given a minor league contract and a chance in Spring training. Why not still? Next year's OF is still up in the air with the Santana variations and Kielty still unsigned (I know I'm ignoring Moss). If it didn't work out, then release him to give him his deserved ML slot.

Although I'm glad that he's moving to the NL (since the Sox haven't the room for him), I'm glad too that he will be returning to Fenway this year.

I think both the Red Sox and Kapler realized he wasn't going to make the team. Kapler wants to start; he has always wanted to start. He knows he has a much better chance to do that for a team like Milwaukee.
