So Clemens spoke...

...big frickin deal.

In other news...

  • 9 teams watched FA Starting "Pitcher" Kris Benson throw in Phoenix on Monday. In other news, I threw a bullpen session in the Nashville-area last Tuesday, and scouts from zero teams showed up to watch. I am not married to Anna Benson. I'm convinced this is the only difference between Kris and I in terms of our pitching abilities.
  • Oh yeah. That Benson news can't hurt us in shopping Tavarez around the NL as a starter.
  • From Ken Rosenthal, via MLBTR: Mariners may be the "winners" (4/$44-48) in the Carlos Silva sweepstakes. Tim at MLBTR wisely notes that, y'know, many teams could do a lot worse than Silva. And whichever team (ed: Philadelphia, Houston) reacts to this by signing Kyle Lohse for 4/$36 or 4/$40 is going to wish they'd just ponied up the extra dollars for Silva.
  • Anyone still wondering why the Rays wanted to unload Elijah Dukes?
  • Pot meets kettle wherein Pete Rose = pot and Bonds, Clemens, etc. = kettle. This is just hilarious. Cal Ripken, Jr. should've made this statement. Tony Gwynn. Nolan Ryan. Pete Rose? Yikes. Oh wait. It's an interview with Dennis Miller on the VS. network, so no one will see it anyway. Bullet dodged.
  • I've done a poor job keeping up with the TYIB awards, which is a shame because the Sox have done well. To this point: Starter, Closer, Setup man, Performance (Buch's no-no), and DP was the runner-up to Tulowitzki for Rookie. Guesses on the rest:

Defensive player: Ichiro or Tulo, Blooper: Should be Aramis Ramirez. Scores despite running into his own 3B coach, who was standing in the way. Kind of a metaphor for their entire season, Play: DP or Tulo's triple-killing (ed: Watch Jeter's play. Say what you will about Lugo's D, but he gets to that ball, stops, plants his feet, and throws. As you're supposed to.), Moment: I'd like Biggio, but for some reason I'd be okay with Bonds as well. Couldn't tell you why that is at the moment, Postseason Moment: It'll be Manny, Drew (one of the most fluid swings I saw from anyone all year), or Yankee fans flooding the ballots to bring more attention to those f'in bugs in Cleveland.

Aight, I guess I could discuss Clemens now.
  • The statement has been picked apart pretty well elsewhere. Here and Here in particular.
  • I'll get this out of the way: I don't believe him, though I know I should wait until he states his case (if he ever does).

That being said, the ludicrosity of some of his statement is just mind-boggling. Roger: What % of people with 25 years of public life always get the benefit of the doubt? Seriously. This isn't even about whether you're a dick or not. (ed: You are.) It's about assuming such a thing to be some kind of universal truth.

  • And, having to write about this has reminded me of how slow a news day/week it has been. Might have to start the Daily Dos(e) up again...

I think Chad Finn said it best:

"Clemens is so compulsively dishonest I don't think he knows what the truth is half the time. I don't take steroids . . . it's not about the money . . . I thought it was the baseball . . . Will McDonough had it right all along: he's The Texas Con Man. What a world-class fraud."

Re: So Clemens spoke...
"I plan to publicly answer all of those questions at the appropriate time in the appropriate way."

This statement to me just screams "I'm lying". It does so because I hear that line all the time (specifically in music when a band breaks up, one member accuses the other as the reason for the break up, the other denies and says that exact line "I'll tell you the whole story, just not right now" and then they never do), so to me, reading between the lines Clemens is saying "Yeah, I have nothing to disprove these accusations right now...but give me time, i'll make up someth- i mean come up - with something"

Especially considering Pettite has basically confirmed the the stuff on him in the report in accurate, and his name and Clemens name are linked pretty heavily in the report, so being a "god" man who in good faith said had to admit, and being BFF with Clemens, you'd think if the Clemens part was wrong he'd say something like "However, Clemens was not the one who introduced me and he was never around when they happened", or something like that. obviously he didn't

Re: So Clemens spoke...
By the way, considering they are purely decided on fan based votes, they don't mean all that much, but still, nice to see the sox asolutely running away with the TYIB awards, we've gotten top 3 in all categories, and top 2 in all but one. Allen left out the Terry got runner-up, and that Ortiz got 3rd in the hitter category...on a down year

Return of the OC???
Off topic, but i had to post.  The Chicago Tribune mentions today that the White Sox may put recently acquired Orlando Cabrera on the table, and speculates the White Sox could move him to Boston for Crisp and Lugo.   I don't see why the White Sox would do this, but I'm all for it!  Story below:

Re: Return of the OC???
The White Sox would have to give the Red Sox a little more. Plus the Red Sox would have to pay a chunk of Lugo's salary. The 1-for-2 trade just isn't even, and I'm not sure the Sox want to get rid of Lugo right now.

Agree ... I'm guessing he has at least one more year in his grace period ...

Re: Return of the OC???
I would love to get O.C. back and stick it to the Angel fans who dissed him after the trade.  They all claimed that Jon Garland was such a smart deal, but O.C. is a gamer and you just don't let guys like that go.

O.C. and DP middle infield would be NICE!!!

Re: Return of the OC???
I think Lugo was better in the field this year than O-Cab.

Is it just me, or does his denial remind me of Palmerio's "I DID NOT TAKE STERIOD" finger pointing

Re: So Clemens spoke...
Oh, and one more thing and then I'll shut up. I love how everyone that is coming clean is saying "but I only did it once", as if the entire MLB just wanted to try steriods once, that's all :)

It's almost like they're thinking "well if I tell the public I only did it once (even though the Mitchell report has a check of mine that proves I bought a couple thousand dollars worth of it), maybe they won't think my numbers were boosted by steriods"

Re: So Clemens spoke...
Some of those TYIB awards are kind of a joke

Joba as the runner up to Oki as set up man of the year? He only pitched 24 innings in 19 games!

Defensive player of the year?  Mike Lowell is up for consideration whereas his Gold Glove winning counterpart across the diamond at first isn't in the top 10?

I love how the big dumb hick is nominated for the moment of the year for his announcing his return.  What a blowhard.

Biggio's 3,000 hit was the non-Sox related moment of the year for me.  That's a gamer and he's stepping right off the field into Cooperstown.

It's easy to say that the two Paps' moments from "Postseason Moment" are the easy pick.  But I think that Drew home-run (I agree with Allen about it being the smoothest stroke all year) set everything off on the right foot and got the momentum going through the playoffs.  That was a 72 million dollar home-run and it was worth every penny.

Re: So Clemens spoke...
I've been hearing the arguments about it long enough that I believe it, too:
  1. Post-season awards are pointless.
  2. HOF is pointless. (The museum up there, however, is very, very cool)
Anybody else with me?

Allen, your Benson comments are hilarious.

Has there been a more overrated couple than Kris and Anna Benson in the past 10 years?

Oh sorry Anna, you just are not hot enough to make up for your husband's weak stuff on the mound.

Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte?

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.
