SBNation 2007 MLB Awards: Cy Young Winners

It's the moment you've all been waiting for. The announcement of the SBNation Cy Young winners for the 2007 MLB season. I won't keep you on the edge of your seat much longer.

The winner of the regular season Cy Young award in the American League is: CC Sabathia

Source: The Feed

Here's how the voting broke down:

American League 1st 2nd 3rd Points
C. C. Sabathia 13 3 2 76
Josh Beckett 3 10 2 47
John Lackey 2 3 4 23
Fausto Carmona 1 1 3 11
Johan Santana - 1 4 7
Erik Bedard - 1 3 6
Roy Halladay - - 1 1

You can have your Cy Young award, CC. Because Josh Beckett, and the rest of the Red Sox Nation, would rather be holding the World Series trophy right now ... oh wait. We're already doing that.

For the National League, Sir Strikeoutalot, Jake Peavy, takes home the honors. Here's how the NL voting went:

National League 1st 2nd 3rd Points
Jake Peavy 21 - - 105
Brandon Webb - 17 1 72
Brad Penny - - 10 10
John Smoltz - 1 2 5
Cole Hamels - 1 1 4
Jeff Francis - 1 1 4
Tim Hudson - 1 - 3
Aaron Harang - - 3 3
Chris Young - - 2 2
Carlos Zambrano - - 1 1

Yeah, I guess you could say Peavy won.

Thoughts? Was it fair? Did Beckett get screwed? Can we not bake our cake and eat it, too?

Re: SBNation 2007 MLB Awards: Cy Young Winners
Throwing around 200 innings is valuable for your team. Throwing 241.1 innings (50 more than the previous year) is a danger to your performance and to the team's. I believe that Sabathia's immense workload (the selling point of his Cy candidacy) contributed to his terrible post-season performance.

I care far more about the Cy than the Golden Gloves (which favor incumbency more than any institution except perhaps Congress). It's more often given to the player who merits it, making it a higher distinction. It's unfortunate that Beckett didn't get more 1st-place votes, but I understand the reasoning behind this decision.

Re: SBNation 2007 MLB Awards: Cy Young Winners
As long as we're talking about just the regular season, I guess I'm okay with Sabathia getting it over Beckett. I'm just a little mystified that it wasn't closer.
What would Dogbert do?

Re: SBNation 2007 MLB Awards: Cy Young Winners
I think since it was the regular season, in which Sabathia had the best numbers, except wins, which weren't totally his to control.  He deserves the award. Maybe there ought to be a similar award for the best pitcher in the post season?

I agree. I've detected a wee bit of anti-Sox animus from our SBN brethren and sistren.

Re: SBNation 2007 MLB Awards: Cy Young Winners
I'm ok with Sabathia getting it -- I think he's the most deserving candidate this year, with Beckett close behind and Carmona third.

But how can those two people who voted for Lackey first justify that? That's insane!

Re: SBNation 2007 MLB Awards: Cy Young Winners
Its a fair result but I concur with the first post about overuse.  I prattled on about this with regard to the managers vote and how utilising your team to maximise not only its regular season performance but its postseason performance.  Sure Beckett could've thrown another 20 innings or so...buy why?  We had the best record AND won the series.
Besides the real question is this...if you had to pick one starter on each league to pitch for your life, who are you going with?  Me....Beckett and Peavy, no arguments.

Peavy
There was an interesting comment regarding Peavy in an ESPN chat today -
Eric (San Diego, CA): Have Peavy and Young, and the Padres for that matter, peaked? Peavy has NEVER won a big game.

SportsNation Jim Callis: You wonder . . . I had someone with the Padres say exactly the same thing about Peavy.

I've only admired Peavy's stats from afar, never paying attention to how he's done in the bigger games. But it's interesting to see a Pads fan and a Pads FO guy (through the grapevine, admittedly) complain about his big-game ability, or lack thereof.

Re: Peavy
Let's take a look at his post-season stats (courtesy of baseball-reference.com):

2 Games; 12.10 ERA; 0-2; 9.2 IP; 13 ER; 4BB, 5 SO.
(both games against St. Louis, 2005 and 06 NLDS)

Maybe the Padres would like to trade Peavy for a proven playoff starter. How about Schilling for Peavy, straight up?

Re: Peavy
Or Schilling and Coco?

Re: Peavy
There's no way Schilling would get traded. I'm sure he has a no-trade clause, too.

Re: Peavy
There's no way in hell the Padres accept a Schilling and Coco for Peavy deal.

Re: Peavy
Of course players signed yesterday to a 1-year deal do not get traded.

Re: SBNation 2007 MLB Awards: Cy Young Winners
Beckett pitched much better in the postseason and in the end that's all that counted.

Re: SBNation 2007 MLB Awards: Cy Young Winners
Sabathia deserved the Cy Young.  He was simply more valuable to his team during the regular season.

I can live with that.  polishes the World Series trophy

You haven't got the game ball too?
Bottom 9th B:1 S:0 O:0 With Bill Mueller batting, Dave Roberts steals (1) 2nd base.

Re: SBNation 2007 MLB Awards: Cy Young Winners
Beckett wasn't screwed because Sabathia and Beckett were essentially tied with two weeks to go.  At which point Sabathia had two good starts and Beckett had two weak starts.

Roughly speaking.

Funny, but one of the main arguments being advanced in favor of Sabathia was that he had pitched a lot more innings in the regular season.  But some observers think that his high inning count contributed to his weak postseason performances.
