A-Rod's top choice: Boston Red Sox

Or so they're reporting in the Boston Globe.

You know, talent-wise, I'd love to get him here. As great as Lowell has been, A-Rod is just a more dangerous hitter, and he's pretty solid with the glove, too.

But not for $350 million.

Star-divide

If A-Rod wants to win a World Series or three -- which is the reason cited for the interest in Boston -- he should be willing to make less money than the gross domestic product of half the nations on the planet.

Take $10 million a year. Maybe $15M. And shut the hell up in the clubhouse and the press about how life is unfair or the press doesn't like you or the fans are mean to your wife. Be satisfied with getting paid more money in a year than most people make in a lifetime, and all for playing a game most of us would love to still be playing.

Your agent wouldn't like it, but he works for you -- and if you're serious about winning a championship, you ought to remind him of that!

Re: A-Rod's top choice: Boston Red Sox
Agreed.  A-Rod is a better player thean Mike Lowell.  I still rather have Mikey.

Regarding the statement that Slappy would like to play in Boston, I think it also has to be viewed as a case of Boras being Boras.  If the MFY are taken at their word and are out of the running, Boras needs Boston involved in order to jack his price up.  Without New York and Boston in the bidding, A-Rod will be lucky to get $30 million a year.  He isn't going to hold out or go to Japan.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Re: A-Rod's top choice: Boston Red Sox
If A-Rod is available in Boston on a 5yr/$100m deal, then I'd sign him up tomorrow. It's not exactly a mean salary, but neither is it what he might get elsewhere.

Let's be clear, however. NO team will sign A-Rod for 10yrs. No team is that crazy / desperate. 5yrs/$150m - maybe. But I'll take Lowell and Schilling for that kind of money ...

Re: A-Rod's top choice: Boston Red Sox
Jez,

I wouldn't be so sure to think that no team will give Payrod a 10 year deal. It's more than likely going to happen. All the teams that have come out and said they will not sign the guy are bluffing. Make no mistake about it, the guy is going to get 10 years 375-400 million.  I think the Angels will make the deal with the devil, and then also make a trade with Minnesota or Cleveland and acquire Santana or Colon this off season. The Angels have never been known to trade away young talent, but I predict this will be the year they do so. I think they will have the most productive off season in the bigs this year.

**Santana or Sabathia since Colon is coming off the books.

Re: A-Rod's top choice: Boston Red Sox
Time will tell, I guess. But the risks for years 7 through 10 are enormous. $120m is an awful lot of money if he's not performing at that age ...

Re: A-Rod's top choice: Boston Red Sox
Wow, you mean A-Rod wants to play for the team that won the world series and currently is set up for a long, possible dynasty type, run.

Incredible, I wonder how he decided?

A-Rod is cancer, now he is a front runner.  Theo, just turn around, back away slowly from the negotiation table, and maybe the Angels will pay him $350 million and we will get out of this with another 2 or 3 rings.

If the Dodgers sign A-Rod, I say the Sox send Coco to LA for Andy LaRoche.  wishing....

Do you think Miguel Cabrera could be had for a package involving Lester and not Buccholz or Ellsbury?

Re: A-Rod's top choice: Boston Red Sox
No way we are getting Miggy if the package we send back doesn't include one of those two guys. The best choice Im starting to think is to resign Lowell, give him a 3 year deal overpaid to compensate for the 4th or 5th that other teams will offer.

+2.

Overpaying for fewer years is worthwhile late in an all-star's career.

Re: A-Rod's top choice: Boston Red Sox
I have no issues trading away Buchholz for Santana or Sabathia if we are given the chance for an extension window. I do however, have a problem trading away buchholz for a position player not named Pujols. I think if Lowell does sign elsewhere we can fill that hole, and not use Buchholz to do so. Trading for Santana and then signing him long term would almost guarantee us the division at this point.

More like the WS for the next three years. Santana, Beckett, Dice? Fuggedaboutit.

Probably not, but even if he could, why trade for a guy who is going to eat his way out of the majors in the next three years?

Re: A-Rod's top choice: Boston Red Sox
I think if there was not such an interest in Miggy from teams like the Dodgers and the Angels, who both have quality prospects to spare, maybe.  The Sox are just going to get out-traded on Miggy.

They could offer a great package to Florida, but comparing what the Angels and Dodgers will offer, it wont be enough.

Arte will be far more willing to deal some of their young talent, Brandon Wood or Kendrick, for Miggy and not pay A-Rod.

Re: A-Rod's top choice: Boston Red Sox
in a perfect world we could sign arod for 5 years for 30 million a year. But anyone who signs him for a 10 year contract as though he were still 26, is asking for trouble.

Re: A-Rod's top choice: Boston Red Sox
Say we signed A-Rod to an 8yr/280mil deal. One of the one hand it would be a bad deal because its obviously bad to commit that much money to anyone, and also giving a 32 year old an eight year deal is not a good practice either.

But by the same token, we already are pretty stack for a run at a few more championships in the next five years, and getting A-Rod would solidify our spot as the top team of the decade and give a legitimate chance of winning three of the next five championships.

hey
if a-rods willing to lower the 350 million mark so he can join a champion calibur team, then more power to him. Its a nice thought that the 350 million quote to the yankees was a snub more than anything else. But i doubt it...and if the sox signed him to anything longer than 6ish years id be upset.

Re: A-Rod's top choice: Boston Red Sox
I think this makes perfect sense.  It seems like most comments are the extremes...some saying he's not worth more than $10M a year and others saying he's going to get $375M, which is totally crazy.

I say the deal would be 8 years at $240M and this would be a sweet deal for the Red Sox.

I sincerely hope A-Rod and the Red Sox make this deal.  This would seal the deal on the flip-flop between the "Whanks" and the Red Sox.

Re: A-Rod's top choice: Boston Red Sox
a-rod was willing to take less last time so he should this time, plus he would get a p.r. boost. The sox should sign lowell and then go after a-rod for short stop. this would give your young pitchers enough runs to relax and give boston the lineup from hell. All (yankee)mlb offense records would be in jeapordy and the win totals not to mention we could win three more straight. take that mfy and watch as the boss dies of heart attack
the difference between a yankee stadium hot dog and a fenway frank is that they dont sell yankee dogs in october anymore.

Re: A-Rod's top choice: Boston Red Sox
I dont know, for me I really do not want my favorite sports franchise paying the greediest man in sports to get an extra 7 games each year.

Thats what the Yankees do, Red Sox are a better franchise than overpaying for a product that will not produce more than 7 wins a year.

Same guy who sat behind me @ a Sox game and said to his friend during batting practice: "why is Coco hitting left handed?"...but had a sweet authentic jersey.

Go to Hell, ARod.
Or Los Angeles, whichever you prefer.

It'll say a lot if the Dodgers don't even bother to go after him.

In fact, given their recent choice of a manager, it'll speak VOLUMES.

DEAR MR. EPSTEIN:

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME ON A-ROD.

THANK YOU.

Treating this thread as a catch-all
for issues around 1B/3B...

What about Teixeira? This article suggests that he might be available from the Braves for the right talent, if he looks too expensive to re-up. Maybe Crisp plus a couple of prospects would get it done?

Excellent young talent. Makes far more sense to me than getting locked up with the redoubtable Mike Lowell for more than two more years.
