Re: definitely
No, he isn't. That's one almost home run and a line drive that Lugo needed a ladder to reach.

I hate to say it, but unless Oki is ready to go tonight after his game 2 heroics, we're going to need Gagne to pitch tonight.

Re: With Paps and Oki rested
It might. Oki went two innings on Thursday, so I doubt we can rely on him for the eighth, and Paps went 1 1/3 on Thursday, so you don't want him going two innings tonight in case we need him tomorrow. So who else can you put in there for the eighth?

by RSNexile on Oct 27, 2007 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: MDC?
I forgot about him. Well, better him than Gagne -- but we need Oki to come up big here, and then we need MDC to pitch well, too. If either falters, it'll be Gagne's turn.

Re: Get the ball down and get the DP
You know, I don't get this. I used to pitch a lot, and I never had a problem locating my pitches low in the zone. Oki's a major league pitcher, so why is everything waist-to-letter high?

Re: Get the ball down and get the DP
Not to be trite, but I do think the altitude does change things a lot.

by sdkramer.otm on Oct 27, 2007 11:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Get the ball down and get the DP
Not that much. It's a question of making adjustments. Unless your arm is too tired, a good pitcher should be able to locate his fastball at the knees once he is warmed up.

Breaking balls, on the other hand, are a different matter. For them, the ball won't break as much, and it takes a lot of experience to figure out what you can get away with.

Pre-Mature Sour Grapes
I'm not sure what the point is here.

A) We haven't won anything besides the first 3 games.

2) The Sox make a lot of money. The FO does a great job selling the entire team as a product, small stadium + large fanbase = high demand for tickets, which = higher ticket sales. They put this money back into the team. Would it be better if the Sox ownership group just pocketed that money?

Z) Look who did the heavy lifting for the Sox tonight. Sox draftees Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia, Manny Delcarmen, and Jonathan Papelbon. Dice-BB is obviously bought and paid for, but the only thing I'd ask you to consider is, say what you want about the Sox for the money they plunked, but Daisuke himself made $6M this season. He was worth $6M this season. So make sure to distinguish between "Sox overpaying" and "Overpaid Daisuke" when spewing this garbage elsewhere.

Don't respond. You've given me no reason to believe you'll be sensible in doing so, and you can feel free if you'd like to say I'm being unfair in this statement.

Re: Pre-Mature Sour Grapes
Average attendance at Rockies games this year was just over 28,000.

For the 3-game series against the Yankees, the Rockies front office charged "premium" prices, with the normally $45 ticket going for $75.

That's the thinking of the Rockies management.  I'd classify it as "AAA", but that would insult a lot of Triple-A organizations.

by BC14 on Oct 28, 2007 2:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Re: Pre-Mature Sour Grapes
This is overstating the point a bit (read: overly insulting to the Rockies), but you're absolutely right.

The thing is, when you ante up for known quantities (um, Drew and Lugo, I guess) or pitchers who were bigger than life before they came here (Daisuke), you have something to sell.

For the Rockies, as good as they've been this season, is there any way they could have sold tickets (pre-season) based on "Troy Tulowitzki, RoY and GG SS" or "Kaz Matsui, really guys, much better than when he was with the Mets" or "Willy Tavares:  didn't make us wish you could steal 1B most of the season". I'm picking extremes, but obviously, when you have a lot of unexpected or semi-unexpected good things happen to a team, it's harder to market.

The Rockies weren't expected to make the postseason, so you have to do what you can to get butts in the seats (lower prices, for example). If they don't hike the prices a bit and then use that anticipated or actual revenue to intelligently sign some FAs or extend some of their young players at cheaper prices, then they'll make absolutely no steps forward, at any point, and really show the Rockies' fans their committment to winning.

And guess what the #1 complaint is about the team's front office, year in and year out:

"They don't spend enough money to get the good players, wa--h-h-h-h-h."

So now that you're local franchise is on the brink of being swept, it all boils down to MONEY?

For 100% of baseball owners, OWNING a MLB franchise is by far the least profitable thing they do. If the Rockies were somehow able to convince Santana to pitch in their frickin ballpark when he becomes a FA, if they lose out on him b/c of money, it's no one's fault but their own. Whatever profit John Henry makes off of the Sox is absolute peanuts compared to his other venture(s).

Re: Let me be the first to ...
And there's the rub with the Rockies front office.

Do a google on "Mickey Monus".  That guy was actually going to be the majority owner in the team back when the franchise was first awarded.

Ol' Mickey did a little time (10 years) in Club Fed.  It nearly cost Denver the franchise, after his $1 BILLION bilking of a drug store chain that he owned (Phar Mor) became news.

But the most recent iteration of the team ownership are penny-pinchers, to be sure.

No confusion, Allen.  We're in agreement.  I know that there was another owner in the Rockies, back in the late 90s early 00's - his name escapes me at the moment, but his "real" job was running / owning a trucking company.  That long-term venture went bankrupt, and the Rockies was really all he had, so of course, every $ was used for his own, nothing like you see in the old teams, Boston, Philly, NY, etc...

This Rockies organization has always been an anachronism.

Rockies fans have been running this "New Evil Empire" line since they couldnt figure out Okie in game 2.

Rockies fans:

First we are a Nation not an Empire.

Second, you got beat by a 2 guys who make league minimum.

Third, I remember the good ole days when you spent ridiculous amounts of money on Daryl Kile, Dennie Neagle and Mike Hampton.  So now you've decided you are above paying for free agents bc 18 of you 25 players still haven't reach arbitration eligibility?  Wow how big of you.

Fourth, talk to the Sox fans in about 2 years when you have to pony up $200 million to keep Holliday in Denver.  Again, will you stick by your virtue of not paying for players or will you cast this aside to keep him from the Mets?

Last, seriously, live it up bc when the Dodgers get Johan Santana and PAY HIM, you wont sniff the post season for another 15 years.

Btw, Lester is paid league minimum and tonight you needed the $103 million dollar man, not Josh EFFing Fogg.

I know, its the common line from most of the third tier franchises who wont spent money.

What must hurt is the fact that the Sox built this team thru the draft, developing players, making smart and dumb trades, going over seas to Japan and adding free agents.  Sox didn't just buy this team.

Re: Let me be the first to give congrats on winnin
Also, I wonder if the people making these statements will be chirping next year when the Sox clear almost $30 million from our payroll?

Clement - gone
Coco - Traded
Schilling - Unfortunately gone
Tavarez - gone
Gagne - gone
Hinske - most likely gone or cheaper
Javier Lopez - gone
Timlin - most likely gone

This adds up and Mike Lowell will cost a few extra $$$ to resign + a few free agents, but many of these spots are going to be filled with cheaper replacements, Ex. Coco and Ellsbury.

Wouldn't be so quick on the trigger there with Timlin (reasonable price, I say yes.) or Lopez (semi-irrational like for the guy in the organization), and I'd be quicker on Hinske (what can he do that Brandon Moss couldn't do with more athleticism?).

Re: Let me be the first to give congrats on winnin
Yeah, I love Timlin. I love his hats.  Guy never washes them.  Maybe he will give us the "home town" deal and stay.

Agree with Moss, plus giving him time will help us in the future.

There are plenty of left hand relievers available this off season, Javier can go, no problems from me.  Unfortunately we released the wrong lefty.  Should of kept J.C. Romero.

Re: Let me be the first to give congrats on winnin
I'm not entirely sure we need a LH reliever for the regular season (how often do we have to face REALLY tough lefties?). If we used Lopez for what he's good at (namely, generally getting RHHs to groundout), I wouldn't be upset at him being around next season.

And I'm guessing Timlin would give us the discount.

The Red Sox did not buy a ring, they drafted, traded, developed, and signed our Veterans to a ring.

That is how sports franchises work.  If your baseball team does not spend AT LEAST what an NBA or NFL salary caped league pays its roster, your ownership is not trying to win, they want to make money.

Even the Clippers pay their players $80 million.
