Open Thread: ALCS Game Five - Red Sox @ Indians, 8:00 p.m. EST

Do or die, Red Sox Nation. Do or die.

Nothing is left to be said about tonight's match-up. Sox win, they live to fight another day. Sox lose, Indians and Rockies match-up in the worst World Series ever (juuuust kidding). Sox will put the ball into the hands of "Texas flame-thrower" Josh Beckett. The Indians counter with an ace of their own, C.C. Sabathia.

Red Sox 1. Dustin Pedroia, 2B 2. Kevin Youkilis, 1B 3. David Ortiz, DH 4. Manny Ramirez, LF 5. Mike Lowell, 3B 6. Bobby Kielty, RF 7. Jason Varitek, C 8. Coco Crisp, CF 9. Sox need just one win.
That's my way of looking at it.

Saturday, Sunday, are irrelevant right now.

Win today, and worry about Sat/Sun on those days.

Just one win.

Re: Open Thread: ALCS Game Five - Red Sox @ Indian
To be fair, when they came back from break and had a better (and closer) angle, it was probably too close, especially with the padding moving as it did.

Doesn't mean they had to show that first one like 87 times, while repeating that they were sure it wasn't out, despite the first angle being inconclusive.

Re: Cy Young...
That's 2 games in a row Beckett has dominated a good team and Sabathia couldn't get it done against a strong lineup.  I'd love to know the breakdown on each starter regarding level of competition and who is actually beating the better teams.  8 wins against the Royals and Baltimore are obviously easier then beating the Angels, Yankees and Detroit.

by sydneysox on Oct 19, 2007 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Re: Cy Young...
That's a great point, and it got me wondering that as well.

Sabathia went on a win streak between late August and late September.

Look who he beat:
8/29:  Minn.
9/3:  Minn.
9/8: LAA
9/14 KCR
9/19 DET
9/28 KCR

Here's his season record.  As you suggest, he was quite adept at beating the lower-ranked teams, and seems to have pithched often against KCR & Detroit.

I note that only once did he face the Sox, on 7/24, and that was a loss.  So, for 2007, he's 0-3 against Boston, and hasn't pitched against the Yankees at all.

Re: Cy Young...
I noted that a couple weeks ago he had faced the White Sox, Twins and Royals 13 times. They were the three worst offensive teams in the AL this season. I didn't do a very thorough analysis, but I'm sure it skewed the stats in his favor.

That said, abathia is a better pitcher than we've seen this series. I think he's just exhausted.

Good overall argument, I think, though I'm not sure facing Detroit a lot would/did end up doing him any favors. Their offense ain't bad. Scored almost 900 runs this season.

Re: Cy Young...
But if the argument is based on a comparison of Beckett and Sabathia (which is the impied undercurrent, I think), surely Beckett having to face the Yanks so much balances out Sabathia vs. te Tigers.
