Open Thread: 9.21.06 vs Minnesota

Starting Pitchers

Minnesota: Johan Santana (18-5), 2.77 ERA, .98 WHIP.
Boston: Josh Beckett (15-10), 5.02 ERA, 1.32 WHIP.

Starting Lineups

Minnesota:

1. Luis Castillo, 2B
2. Nick Punto, 3B
3. Joe Mauer, C
4. Michael Cuddyer, RF
5. Justin Morneau, 1B
6. Torii Hunter, CF
7. Rondell White, LF
8. Jason Tyner, DH
9. Jason Bartlett, SS

Boston:

1. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
2. Mark Loretta, 1B
3. David Ortiz, DH
4. Mike Lowell, 3B
5. Trot Nixon, RF
6. Jason Varitek, C
7. Carlos Pena, LF
8. Gabe Kapler, CF
9. Alex Gonzalez, SS

Notes

  • At the beginning of the season, a September battle between Beckett and Santana would have seemed very exciting. Now the Sox are out of playoff contention and Beckett has kinda sucked, so...
  • Crisp is out of the lineup because he's having his finger checked by a specialist
  • The other Pena will get a start in the outfield. He's never played there at the major league level before.
  • Papi's 50th home run ball will be auctioned off to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and the Plaza de la Salud Hospital de Ni?os in the Dominican.

Re: Open Thread: 9.21.06 vs Minnesota
guys, I have enjoyed Remy and Orsillo this year tremendously, up until today.  I think they may have just "jumped the shark".  Their "flabbio" schtick is getting really annoying, with Remy wearing that stupid mask ... I suppose maybe they are just bored now that the season appears to be over ...

Re: Open Thread: 9.21.06 vs Minnesota
Ortiz is the Babe Ruth of our day.  He even hits like him, lefty with the weight on the back foot ... I really believe the Babe has been reincarnated as a dominican ... Maybe this is why the curse was lifted.

52!  Could he break the Babe's record this year?

Re: Open Thread: 9.21.06 vs Minnesota
Why can't Francona ever keep his starter in? Now we have runners on the corners, albeit with 2 gone. But come on. Josh was dominating and there's no need for this stupidity in the ninth.

Re: Open Thread: 9.21.06 vs Minnesota
Game over. Sox take it 6-0. Beckett with 8 shut out innings, 5 Ks, and no walks.

Papi creates a new Sox single season HR record and breaks it only a few innings later with #51 and 52. Lowell goes back to back with the second one.

someone call cashman and offer our entire farm system and a bucket of chicken wings for jeter's future offspring. we need intangibles, and we need them NOW!

Re: Open Thread: 9.21.06 vs Minnesota
Are you...lost?  I mean.  If you can't work the internet...well.  I suppose you could ask Al Gore.  But seriously.  For debating amongst sox fans and yankee fans, can't ask for better than the yanksfansoxfan website.  Want a Yankee blog?  Bronx Banter is very well-written, even if I often, understandably, take issue with some of the subjects of the writing.

Otherwise...can't help ya.  Gloating is...um.  Anyway.  I wasn't going to say you were acting like a ten year old or anything.  Certainly not.  It's not like you've been incredibly immature...definitely...um...not.  Anyway.  Enjoy yourself.  Find yourself a blog that's more 'you'.  No fellow Yankee fans to gloat with here.  Just us Red Sox fans trying to enjoy the rest of our season.  I remember when I want on Yankee blogs two years ago ruining other people's writing about their team that lost the ALCS.  Wait.  That didn't happen.  That'd require being classless.

Re: Open Thread: 9.21.06 vs Minnesota
While not a save situation, I now know even moreso how Indians fans must've felt during Wickman's saves. Yeah.  He's probably going to get the job done.  But how much mental stress is he going to put on ya before he does?

Re: Open Thread: 9.21.06 vs Minnesota
I love how we're systematically turning half the team to complete utility players. Youk? Lets throw in in LF. Pena? yeah, let's get him OF experience also. Loretta? Okay, the Brewers took care of that (they had him pitch for an inning of things...and he actually got 2 SO, maybe he's our solution to the bullpen problem)

Anyways, how poetic is it for Ortiz to break the sox record off of the team that dumped him...and off their ace none-the-less. My only hope is that this isn't a preview for how the Twins will do in the off-season, they really deserve the title more then anyone else (good fundementals, great fairy-tale story, I've liked them for years and they've never seemed to be able to pull it off)

Just ignore 2006ALEASTCHAMPS, if he really has nothing better to do then post negative comments every sox game from now till the season ends, that's his problem for not having a life or the intellegence to reasonably debate (and there has been yankees fan who have posted comments here who have been able to reasonably debate, and there's no problem with that)

Re: Open Thread: 9.21.06 vs Minnesota
Check the right column of the home page of this site  under "Recent Diaries", there are plenty on topics to debate. Given most of them are regarding the Red Sox which might not interest you, but that's because you're on a Red Sox blog. Go to pinestripealley.com if you want to talk all about yankees. Of course there's not much to debate on a thread that is about the game that is currently being played
