Trade Deadline: After the fact.

Several thoughts.

David Ortiz is not human.  He rests on some other plane of existance when not batting 3rd in our lineup.

David Wells is human.  We all knew this.  I will say, however, velocity looked okay, and I think this showed that not giving him a rehab start was a bad idea.  I forsee 6 IP 3ER next time out.  I think he'll settle down.  It's not like he's a guy who's ever relied on his good health for success.

No trades.  Well, obvious positives are that Lester, Pedroia, Hansen, Delcarmen, and to a lesser extent, Van Buren and Bucholz are still in our organization.  I would like to think the Rockies would've taken Seanez or Tavarez and maybe Edgar Martinez/Jermaine Van Buren from us for Shealy.  I suppose the FO likes having someone who can actually play 1B, however...

The Yankees were big winners, no other way to look at it.  The big knock on Abreu has always been lacksadaisical play (especially on defense).  He seems to look for the walk more than the hit (94 hits to 91 walks on the season).  However, he's a much better option in RF everyday over Bernie Williams.  Craig Wilson will be a dangerous hitter off the bench for them.  Not sure why Littlefield hasn't been burned at the stake for getting only Shawn Chacon in return.  Craig Wilson is also a sub-par defender, and it will be interesting if the Yankees make it to the playoffs and he or Giambi pull a Buckner at 1B...as a baseball fan, I feel bad for Melky Cabrera in that, whether deserving of it or not, he will not get a shot at a full-season starting position til he's 28 or so...

Trot injured...I can live with.  This means two things.  He gets fully healed and becomes the Trot we remember from a few years ago, or he doesn't, and becomes much easier and cheaper to resign for a couple years as a platoon player/bat off the bench.  By the way, for anyone still upset that the Yankees acquired Bobby Abreu, compare his and Trot's stats this year.  ...very interesting information there.  # of PAs aside, they're basically the same player, with Trot actually trying to play defense.  Anyway, in the meantime, we get lots more ABs for Wily Mo, and he took the opportunity and ran with it tonight.  Frickin scary...for our opponents.

I'll reserve comment on Tek's injury til there's more information.  Mirabelli at least looked like the old Mirabelli at the plate: One BIG LONG hit, and fooled completely in his other ABs.  With how well he worked with Kyle Snyder, I couldn't give a...

Other positives today:

In the near future, the Yankees will not be a possible landing spot for Andruw Jones, Carlos Lee, Alfonso Soriano (if they're serious about keeping Cano), which at least means that the all-geriatric OF is here to stay for another year or so.

The Cubs now have all the all-field no-hit middle infielders they could want.  I still hold hope that Izturis could turn into a hitter, though Maicer may end up being the better of the two anyway.

Cory Lidle has a 5.56 ERA against us in 2 starts.  And nevermind us, how're the Blue Jays/White Sox/Tigers lineups going to like him?

Speaking of the Blue Jays, they still only have one middle infielder who can hit in their lineup.

The White Sox did not acquire a starter, and the Twins did not acquire a bat.  What's more important for the White Sox is that they did not open a spot in the rotation for Brandon McCarthy.

David Ortiz does NOT like to go into extra innings.

Re: Trade Deadline: After the fact.
I don't think Abreu is going to thrive in New York.  His production tends to go down towards the end of the season.  I can't find the numbers ATM but I read an article last week about his SLG%- it was over .750 for the month of may and has declined by an average of .070 points or so EVERY MONTH since.  The current number was somewhere slightly under .400.  That's better than Bernie but not a replacement for either Matsui or Sheffield.

I'm surprised the Yankees went for hitting at the expense of relief pitching, which they'll desperately need in Septemeber.  I'm not surprised because of recent history but because supposedly this season the New York cabal lead by Cashman was supposed to be in charge of roster moves and the Miami cabal lead by Steinbrenner and his cronies were going to stay back- but this seems like a Florida Cabal move to me.  Abreu is 32 years old, slightly past prime.

Sox stand basically pat.  According to Stark Theo had his heart set on getting Clemens but McClane had no interest in trading him.  Oh well.  Our offense is great and our starting pitchers are firming up.  Bullpen is a little shaky if we have to pull a starter before the 6th (I dread seeing Tavarez come into the game) but is lights out 8th-9th.  Hopefully Wells can shape up- we'll need him to pitch if we play in the playoffs at Yankee stadium  with their bush league short porch in RF.

Re: Trade Deadline: After the fact.
I read the Stark article today, also. Sounds like the Sox could have made a deal but McClane didn't want to "aleniate" the Astro fans. You'd think the Astro fans would realize that Roger in Boston would be better off for him than on a "sinking ship" (Thanks, Shea).

I think Roger will regret it come October -- maybe he'll have one more gallon of gas in him for 2007? Imagine that. Schilling and Rocket going out together in their final seasons.

Looking at Abreu...
Well, LOOK AT HIM!!! The only way he was worth 13.6 mil this year (and 15 mil next year) was when he was slamming 30+ homers a year.  This year, he's a Kevin Youkilis who walks more (somewhat impressive) but he his for less average, less power, and for fewer extra bases.  In fact, everyone keeps talking about how Abreu makes pitchers work, but Youk acutally sees more pitchers per PA than him!!  So fear not, the Yankees are merely playing catchup to one of our players, and paying 40 times more!
