Re: all-star starter disrespect for red sox
Someone from KC had to make the team.

While I like to see as many Bosox as possible make the squad, I'm just as happy if they opt out (especially the pitchers).  There's no sense in getting hurt in a meaningless game.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

fair enough
yeah, im not really dissapointed that schilling or beckett wont be wasting pitches there...But im just baffled at how the honor could be thrown to redman, when theres at least 5 clear better choices in the AL.

No need to fuss...
Redman won't see the mound during the game.  They have to put him on the roster, but they'd be crazy to play him...

Re: No need to fuss...
I don't know. If the all-star game goes anything like interleague play (i.e., the AL would be forcing the mercy rule to be invoked, but MLB doesn't have a mercy rule), they can play him for an inning. Save the arms of the pitchers who actually perform.

Re: No need to fuss...
what am i missing? why was there a need to have someone from kc on the roster?

Re: No need to fuss...
Because every team has to have a representative.

Re: all-star starter disrespect for red sox
I'm pretty P-O'd about Schilling he has better numbers than most of the pitchers that made the team. Give the KC spot to Reggie Sanders or someone -- not Redman. He's just bad.

Re: all-star starter disrespect for red sox
True.  I think Schilling should have gotten in.  Its hard to see Lowell going in ahead of ARod, just because of their images.  Gonzo has a light bat, Loretta was on the losing end of a tight battle (Brian Roberts was robbed!)  The person I'm really surprised didn't get in was Nixon.  Batting in the 330s with a great OBP wasn't good enough?  Youk also had a chance at first, but I think that spot will be reserved for AL DHs...an inconvenient truth...

On the flip side though, my boy Arroyo made his first All Star!!  they grow up so fast... leaving home, and then LEAD THE LEAGUE IN ERA!

Re: all-star starter disrespect for red sox
Honestly, the only player on the Royals that is close to deserving a spot is Mark Grudzielanek.  Obviously Loretta is the better hitter right now, both surer hands at second than Cano (if he played in Tampa, only about 15,000 people would know his name...).

No one on the Royals pitching staff deserved a spot.  ...no one.  A lot of pitchers deserved a slot over Buehrle.  Verlander or Liriano would've gotten spots if they pitched in the AL West or the AL East.  Not saying Guillen is overly biased with his picks...but I just did.

All of Buehrle's stats this year indicate that he's starting to decline.  Nothing against the guy, as long as it's not against us I hope he returns to form, but he's just not the pitcher he was even a year ago.  I'm surprised Mauer didn't have to win a final vote with all the talk of Guillen wanting to take Pierzynski.

Re: all-star starter disrespect for red sox
Verlander and Liriano should have been in contention to start the game. Buehrle's been ok this year, but there are a dozen pitchers more deserving who were left out.

Guerrero hasn't justified inclusion
Surely Vernon Wells deserves a starting OF place more. And Mauer has been amazing this year. There's your starting catcher.

Liriano has been phenomenal. Rookie of the Year and Cy Young candidate (apologies, Paps).

And, while I'm wound up about this, why does the All-Star Game determine home field advantage in the off season? It would be much fairer to have this on a turn and turn about basis.

The All-Star Game is a load of revenue-generating rubbish. Keep your fingers crossed none of our players get injured.

Re: Guerrero hasn't justified inclusion
Vladdy was voted in.  There's nothing you can do about that.

Bud Selig is responsible for making the ASG determine home field in the Series.  He did it to boost viewership and add "spice" to a boring exhibition game.

Ozzie Guillen has decided to pick as many Chisox players as possible, unlike Tito (who initially left Clement off the squad in 2005).  Guillen already said he'll tap Joe Crede for the next opening.

Buehrle has no business being on the team.  Here are his stats: 9-5 3.84 ERA.  Notable snubs: Liriano 9-1 1.99 ERA, Verlander 10-4 3.13 ERA, Robertson 8-3 3.14 ERA, Mussina 9-3 3.17 ERA.  It's interesting that the first three pitchers I've named play in Ozzie's division.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Re: all-star starter disrespect for red sox
Does anyone see the plus to all of this here?
Curt Schilling, our 39 year old pitcher gets to have an extended rest instead of having to pitch in another meaningless exhibition match (yes, i know, home field in the WS, etc.  But come on, who thinks the NL seriously has a chance?) Schillings going to have time in the middle of the season to load up for the stretch run, and I think thats a good thing.  Disrespect or not, I for one am glad that we only have position players/reliever going in, instead of one of our starters. After all, we only have four legit ones.

I agree.  I'm happy Schilling won't be there.

Right on.
I know the dollars wouldn't add up, but I'd love to see the All-Star Game overhauled and replaced by, say, an under-27s game. The best young talent from each club shows how good they are to a US- and world-wide audience. There'd be more hunger and purpose to the game, for a start.
