Around SBN: A Miracle Squared: Celebrating The Greatness Of Bo Jackson

Open Thread: 8/4/05 vs KC

(Sorry about no open thread last night. I was having some minor computer problems.)

Another game against Kansas City -- how refreshing. The Sox look for the series sweep against the Royals today at 1 o'clock eastern.

Matt Clement (10-3, 4.43 ERA) is on the hill for the first time since getting hit in the head by a Carl Crawford line drive. I don't think it will effect him much being on the mound today, but we'll just have to wait a see.

On the mound for Kansas City is D.J. Carrasco (5-5, 4.37) who, surprisingly, has a better ERA than Clement, who's seen his drop significantly in recent starts.

Roberto Petagine makes his debut today, batting fourth and playing first base. Kevin Millar will play left field as Manny Ramirez recouperates, and Alex Cora gets the start at second.

RE:
Varitek Grand Slam!

You gotta love Don Orsillo building the hype. "Only David Bell with more bases loaded at bats without a grand slam." It's like he planned it like that. And then Tek goes out and hits one over the bullpen.

hope it will get better...
unfortunatly there was not much to like about Petagine's debut....hopefully there are better days ahead....

I can't complain... or can I?
I can't complain about a win.

On the other hand... any time our pitching staff gives up nine runs, I get concerned.

And any time our pitching staff gives up nine runs TO THE KANSAS CITY ROYALS, I get seriously concerned.

By the way... Curt Schilling. He's gotten out of a number of jams lately, but he seems always to cut it close. A "save" when you give up a run, or when you barely get out of the inning, isn't much of a save in my book.

Anyway, let's root for the Yankees, Baltimore and Toronto to all lose, and put some more daylight between us and the rest of the A.L. East...

RE:
It was a bad day all around, but the bottom line is that we won. Matt Clement wasn't on his game, and neither was Jeremi Gonzalez. But his game isn't anything special to begin with. It's good to see our offense put up some good numbers, though.

Somedays....
Somedays you have to win ugly, it's better than losing ugly.

Clement had....
... a pretty good excuse, no?  First start back from being drilled behind the ear by a line drive, I'm not too worried about future performance.  It's a win and we're on to the Twins.

yeah, but
He's been pretty shaky since the AllStar break (10.69 ERA in four starts).  Getting hit in the head didn't help matters, but his woes started before then.

A win's a win, but that says more about the quality of our hitting than the quality of Clement's pitching at the moment.

RE:
I'm not worried about how he pitches after he got hit in the head. It's how he's pitched since the All-Star break, which you pointed out. It's not encouraging.

RE:
Hansen had a good first outing too: 1 IP, 2 K, and 0 of everything else.
